San Pantaleo

Approximately 15 minutes drive from the luxurious Costa Smeralda is the village of San Pantaleo. In this small village, built in locally quarried stone and nestled between the woods and the surrounding rocks, time seems to stand still and you can still live and breathe the most ancient traditions of Gallura.

During the Middle Ages these lands were depopulated by the move towards the interior of the few villages due to pirate raids. The area was repopulated during the eighteenth century by families of farmers and shepherds from the south of Corsica. It was then that the use of the Stazzi became widespread,  large brick houses where the landowner, his family and his servants lived self-contained lives.

At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the inhabitants of the stazzi in the area asked the bishop of Tempio to build a church in their area. When the bishop to appease them built a church and surrounding houses and then moved there, the village of St. Pantaleo was founded.

In recent decades, the great charm of San Pantaleo has attracted a large number of Italian and foreign artists, some of whom have even moved there to live. Pat Steele, Michele Greco, David Rukli, Eliane Christianson are examples of this, they live and work in the village center, in studios and houses made of wood and stone.
